Tennyson's cycle of twelve narrative poems retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love of Guinevere and her betrayal. The watercolour was owned by Sir Francis Watson, Director of the Wallace Collection from 1963 until 1974, Surveyor of the Queen’s Works of Art and the Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford (1969-70).
