The present bronze was previously attributed to Hans Reichle (1570-1642), a German sculptor who became an apprentice in Giambologna’s studio, before returning to Germany to create monumental works in Munich and Augsburg. The model of Christ is strongly inspired by Giambologna’s Christ at the Column (Bargello, Florence), but betrays a northern influence in the expressive handling of the face and anatomy.
