Le Dr. John Murray employé dans les services médicaux de l'armée de la 'East India Company' prit de nombreuses photographies au début des années 50. Alors qu'il était à l'époque très difficile de trouver le bon équilibre entre la sensibilité des émulsions et les temps d'exposition pour pouvoir obtenir dans une même image un paysage et un ciel, Murray résolu ce problème en ajoutant manuellement du pigment noir sur ces négatifs de papier ciré.
