A FINELY CARVED AGATE PENDANT
SCHOOL OF ZHITING, SUZHOU, 1760-1850
Of rounded rectangular shape, the pendant is well carved on both sides in high relief utilizing the natural honey-brown markings in the stone. One side depicts a boy and a water buffalo in a rocky landscape beneath a five-character inscription, Taiping dian leyuan (Garden of peace and joy). The other side is carved with a boy standing in front of an altar table within a pavilion over which a pine tree arches. The plaque is pierced at the top and affixed with a 14k gold loop for suspension.
2 in. (5 cm.) high
