Austrian by birth, Swiss by circumstance and international by reputation, Maximilian Schell was a distinguished actor, director, writer and producer. Indeed, Schell was one of the most successful non-English speaking actors in the history of American cinema, perhaps best remembered for his Oscar-winning performance in Stanley Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). However, his more overlooked yet equally lasting legacy lies in his assemblage of an unparalleled art collection, his passion being expressed most eloquently in his own words: 'Art is liberating'. Born into a creative family - his mother was an actress and his parents' circle included many artists - Schell amassed an impressive collection in his own lifetime, bringing together a selection of the autograph letters and manuscripts of authors, composers and artists he admired alongside his enviable collection of art.
