AN ALTERED JADE BEAD NECKLACE
NEOLITHIC PERIOD, NORTHWEST CHINA, LIANGZHU CULTURE, CIRCA 2500 BC
The necklace is comprised of fifty-one small beads, three medium-sized beads, an oval bead and a large bead carved on one side with a human mask formed by a defined jaw line, simple, raised linear lips, somewhat triangular nose, and incised eyes below a brow line, all flanked by large ears. All of the beads have opaque, ivory-colored alteration, and some beads still exhibit some of the original greyish-green color of the stone.
