The Bonington family moved from Calais to Paris to establish a shop in the Autumn or Winter of 1818. He continued to sketch in Paris and the outskirts until commencing on his first tour of Normandy in the Autumn of 1821. The present drawing is similar in style and palette to Paris from the Père Lachaise Cemetery, see P. Noon, Richard Parkes Bonington, the complete paintings, New Haven and London, 2008, p. 90, no. 16.
We are grateful to Patrick Noon for confirming the location and date of circa 1821 for the present work.
