The chair, with it's distinctive broad back, shepherd's crook arms and shallow carved decoration relates to a distinguished group that includes a chair formerly in the collection of the J.S.Sykes Esq., illustrated in R.W.Symonds, Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks, London, 1940, p.3, fig. 3. Symonds wrote `the harmonious curves which form the back, arms and front legs endow it with a particular elegance'. Others include a suite of four chairs formerly in the collection of Mrs. David Gubbay, at Clandon Park, Surrey, and another from the same suite in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
A related pair of chairs was sold from the collection of Dr, Yvonne Hackenbroch, Christie's, London, 23 May 2013, lot 50, (£67,875 including premium).
