Sur un mur de Berlin, inscrit à même le béton, la silhouette d’un homme un bras levé se dessine. Cette empreinte humaine comme une signature est devenue un symbole, une icône : celui d’une nouvelle façon de penser l’architecture.Depuis longtemps Le Corbusier était fasciné par l’effet des espaces sur la psychologie humaine. À la manière des anciens il recherche les proportions et mesures fixant des formes harmonieuses. Mais aux monumentales constructions antiques, Le Corbusier oppose une nouvelle architecture fondée sur un rationalisme à taille humaine. C’est au début des années 40 que ses réflexions prennent forme en un ensemble cohérent qu’il nommera plus tard Modulor. Instrument à la fois poétique et mathématique, il est construit autour d’un référant universel : un corps humain, dont la taille est cependant arbitrairement fixée à 2,26 m. bras levé. L’architecte extrapole les justes relations que cette figure entretient avec son espace. Pour ce faire le maître a recours à la divine proportion - le nombre d’or - ou encore aux travaux de son ami Andreas Speizer sur la théorie des groupes. Les recherches de Le Corbusier tournent à l’obsession : croquis, maquettes, peintures, l’artiste multiplie les supports où est affiché son système. En 1947, Le Corbusier fait appel à Constantin Andréou afin de sculpter les figures de ces hommes Modulor qui seront apposées sur le béton encore frais de la Cité radieuse. Dans son atelier de Sèvres, sur un tableau noir, l’architecte trace ses figures, bientôt reproduites sous calque.Le Modulor devient alors un objet physique. Visible de tous, il permet aux habitants et passants de se familiariser avec ce nouvel instrument comme au XVIIIe siècle avec les 16 mètres-étalons placés dans la ville de Paris.En 1957, impressionné par le travail d’Andréou, Le Corbusier fait de nouveau appel au sculpteur grec pour la réalisation de nouveaux «bonshommes» pour l’Unité d’habitation de Berlin. Le Corbusier supervise tous les aspects, toutes les étapes de la création de ses « bonshommes ». Soigneusement, il fait choisir les meilleures essences de bois, contrôle la réalisation et les moindres initiatives de son exécutant. Rien n’est laissé au hasard. La sculpture doublement organique, par le bois qui la compose et la forme humaine qu’elle représente, se lie à l’éclat minéral des parois de béton.La figure présentée ici fut apposée sur la façade est et ouest de la cage d’escalier de l’unité d’habitation de Berlin. This human imprint, like a signature, has become the symbol of a new approach to architecture. Le Corbusier had long been fascinated by the impact of space on human psychology. Echoing an interest which stretched back to Antiquity, the architect sought out the proportions and measurements which would determine harmonious form. Yet in contrast to the monumental constructions of ancient times, he proposed a new architecture whose rationalism was founded on a human scale. In the early 1940s, Le Corbusier’s research coalesced into a coherent entity, which he later named Modulor. An instrument which was both poetic and mathematical, it was based on a single universal reference: the human body, albeit one whose size was arbitrarily fixed at 2.26 metres in height, including its raised arm. Le Corbusier extrapolated from this measure the exact relations between the figure and its surrounding space. To achieve this, the architect deferred to the divine proportion – the golden ratio – as well as to research conducted by his friend Andreas Speizer, a leading exponent of group theory.Le Corbusier’s investigations into this system became an obsession, as he continued to work out his ideas via countless versions and across various media, including sketches, scale models and paintings. It was in 1947 that his research reached a climax, and that he invited Constantin Andréou to sculpt the figures of his Modulor men which would later be embedded in the still-fresh concrete walls of his Cité Radieuse. Beginning in his studio in Sèvres, just outside of Paris, Le Corbusier first traced his figures onto a blackboard before making carbon copies. His intention was that the Modulor would become a physical object, visible to all, and as such enabling residents and passers-by to become familiar with the new concept. As such, Modulor would become the modern equivalent of the metre bars which had been placed two centuries earlier around 18th Century Paris, and which had progressively become accepted as the revolutionary new method of measurement. Andréou’s work pleased Le Corbusier, to the point that in 1957 the latter again commissioned the Greek sculptor to execute additional Modulors for his residential block in Berlin. As in all of his work, Le Corbusier supervised every aspect of production of these Modulors. As records show, it was Le Corbusier who carefully chose the finest quality timber, and who oversaw production down even to accepting or adjusting Andréou’s slightest initiatives. The resulting sculpture is doubly organic, first through its wood material, and also for the human form which it represents. The figure presented here was affixed to the east and west facades of the stairwell in the Berlin residential block. Notably, in its presentation it was incorporated into a Modulor matrix, thus providing the full measure of Le Corbusier’s revolutionary system.
