'Each mark made had to be meaningful at any level ... I took a blank canvas and ... put one mark on it ... and then I added another mark and found some justification for the relationship ... With each mark I had to be able to say there was a reason ... through some kind of systematic relationship over the picture surface' (Richard Hamilton commenting on the Microcosmos paintings in an interview with Andrew Forge for the BBC, broadcast in New Comment, November 1964).
