Suite à son arrivée au Caire en novembre 1893, Émile Bernard suit la mode locale; il s’habille dans un style "égyptien" et épouse Hanenah Saati, d’origine syrienne, en juillet 1894. Il réalise alors plusieurs peintures représentant diverses scènes de son séjour en Égypte, dont la présente œuvre.
Il révèle d’autant plus sa révélation pour l’Orient dans un poème dédié à son épouse où il lui écrit "Toi, tu viens d’Orient, tu m’apportes des palmes / Des roses et l’encens de tes palais profonds / Ton front est tout serein de tes voluptés calmes / Et tes yeux ont l’azur tiédit de tes plafonds" (cité in Aquarelles orientales d'Émile Bernard, 1893-1904, Saint- Germain-en-Laye, 1983, cat. exp., p. 79).
Following his arrival in Cairo in November 1893, Émile Bernard took on the local fashion, dressing in "Egyptian" style and even
marrying a local woman, Hanenah Saati, of Syrian descent, in July 1894. He recorded various scenes of daily life during his Egyptian stay in his paintings, of which the present work is an example.
His fascination with the Orient is further revealed in a poem dedicated to his wife, writing to her, "You come from the Orient, you bring me the palms / The roses and the incense of your profound palaces / Your brow is always serene with tranquil voluptuousness / And your eyes have the tepid blue of your skies" quoted in Aquarelles orientales d'Émile Bernard, 1893-1904, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1983, exh. cat., p. 79).
