The Cohen house (1971) is a culmination of a long professional collaboration between Marcel Breuer and his chief architect Herbert Beckhard.  Starting in 1955 with the Gagarin House I in Litchfield, Connecticut, Beckard was entrusted with direct dealings with the client as well as design and supervision of the project as associate architect.  Beckhard would become Breuer’s lead designer, overseeing numerous residential commissions as well as public works such as St. Francis de Sales Church in Muskegon, Michigan, remaining with Marcel Breuer Associates until the firm closed in 1981. The Cohen House epitomizes an approach to domestic architecture rooted in volumetric functionality expressed through a limited range of material, a philosophy what was distilled in the bespoke interior furnishings of the house and the present lot.
