拍品专文

Twisted, ghost-like, nightmare-like…these are the words that come to mind when observing Saito Takashi’s work. The extremely delicate lines and intense emotions on the paper enthrall one’s attention, as if the painting is an irrevocable spell. Born in 1943 in Tokyo, Japan, the autodidactic artist made his grand debut in the 1963 Yomiuri Independent Exhibition, followed by the Yamatane Museum of Art Award exhibition in 1975. From then on, Saito built his fame as an independent artist who has no affiliation with any school, and continued to astonish Japanese audiences throughout the country with his solo and group exhibitions. Sagawa Art Museum hosted a duet exhibition for him and Raku Kichizaemon XV in 2020, celebrating their common nature of exploring the truth of life and humanity.
Saito Takashi lives and works at Seishido Mountain Pass in Fukushima Prefecture.
