Marina Abramovic s’est imposée comme une pionnière et une référence du « performance art ». Connue pour ses approches parfois extrêmes, elle n’a cessé d’expérimenter sur la place du corps dans l’espace et sa relation au public. La puissance du cri est un sujet récurrent de l’œuvre d’Abramovic qui en a fait un élément central de plusieurs de ses performances, Freeing the voice ou AAA AAA en collaboration avec Ulay. En 2013, elle reproduit Le Cri d’Edvard Munch à l’emplacement exact où le célèbre tableau est censé avoir été peint en 1893, sur les hauteurs d’Oslo. L’image que l’artiste en tire résulte d’une performance collective : trois cents habitants d’Olso ont répondu à son invitation à se « libérer de leurs émotions en criant ». Marina Abramovic offre ainsi une réinterprétation contemporaine du chef-d’œuvre d’Edvard Munch qui continue de vivre plus de cent ans après sa création.
Marina Abramovic has made a name for herself as a pioneer of performance art. Known for her sometimes extreme approaches, she has always experimented with the relationship between bodies, public spaces and audiences. The power of the voice is a recurring theme in Abramovic's work. It is a central element of several of her performances such as Freeing the voice and AAA AAA in collaboration with Ulay. In 2013, she reproduced Edvard Munch's The Scream at the exact location where the famous painting is believed to have been created in 1893, in the hills of Oslo. For this collective performance, three hundred Oslo citizens responded to her call and joined the artist to “release their emotions by screaming”. The resulting photograph is a contemporary reinterpretation of Edvard Munch’s masterpiece that continues to live on long after it was painted, over a century ago.
