Although this picture was executed earlier, it appears to have been reworked by Hacker in 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War. This accounts for the painting being signed twice, once lower right, and later lower left. To add poignancy, an eagle (symbol of the German Empire) hovers upper right, while the figure clutches two white doves (symbols of peace). The figure also wears a crown of laurel (a victor’s crown).
