The Rialto Bridge in Venice was a favourite subject of both the artist and his clients. Several versions of the composition exist, including a sheet comparable to the present one in the Morgan Library and Museum, New York (inv. 1996.22). At the centre of this view is the Rialto Bridge and on the left side the Riva del Vin, the area of the city where wine trading took place.

The second composition depicts the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore with the Punta della Dogana to the right. Giacomo’s father, Francesco Guardi, painted a similar view in a large canvas in the Glasgow Museums (inv. 184; see A. Morassi, Guardi. Antonio e Francesco Guardi, Venice, 1975, no. 422, ill.).

Comparable examples of both of these views by Guardi recently sold at Christie's, New York, as a part of the Collection of Anne and Gordon Getty (21 October 2022, lot 102, sold $23,940 and lot 101, sold $35,280).

For another pair of Venetian views by the artist, see lot 199.
