The sitter is identified as François-Thérèse Hémart, who was married in 1718 to Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville (1680-1765). Dezallier was known as a scholarly amateur, writing Abrégé de la vie des plus fameux peintres (1745–1752), as well as treatises on the French formal garden style and natural histories. He acquired a significant collection of old masters drawings, which were sold in Paris in 1779 after his widow's death.
