Hizen pattern, comprising a fish slice, the blade chased with two fish in rough waters, a serving fork, the handle decorated with flowers and with a turtle emerging from a pond on the bowl, engraved on the reverse with monogram ESD, and two preserve spoons, the handles cast with crabs amongst foliage and with gilt clam shell-form bowls, marked throughout

The Hizen pattern was introduced at Gorham in about 1880. Named for the Northwestern Japanese province famous for the Arita and Imari porcelain kilns, this pattern combined Japanese inspired clouds and animals with art nouveau styling.
