Head of a young girl

Evelyn de Morgan was strongly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and was a frequent visitor to the studio of George Frederick Watts (1817-1904) and studied under Watts's student, her uncle John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908). She married in 1887 the ceramicist William De Morgan. The present chalk drawing does not appear to be a direct study for a painting, however it does resemble a figure in An Angel Piping to the Souls in Hell and The Red Cross (De Morgan Foundation) and is possibly an unused study for a painting.
