Edward Burra’s View at Florence was executed around the time of his second and third visits to Florence, in the late summers of 1965 and 1966. Burra had not visited the city since 1926, this time staying with the American novelist, Jennings Rice. View at Florence is typical of Burra's later work as he increasingly favoured large-scale, empty landscapes. The present watercolour is most likely painted from the Ponte Vecchio, looking east over the Arno, with the bridges receding into the distance.
