ABRAHAM BLOEMAERT, AN HOUSE BURNED DOWN, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH

Painter, draughtsman and engraver Abraham Bloemaert was a member of a dynasty of Utrecht artists. The present drawing was probably intended as a finished work for sale (Bolten, op. cit.) or for engraving, although no print has been associated with it. Two other drawings, one in the De Boer Foundation in Amsterdam (inv. B.629; ibid., no. 1453, ill.), the other in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich (inv.1078; ibid., no. 1451, ill.) depict the same house in ruins with minor variations. The theme of the burning house seems to have preoccupied Bloemaert, who treated it on at least one other occasion in painting (Christie's, London, 10 July 2002, lot 42).

Peintre, dessinateur et graveur, Abraham Bloemaert est membre d’une dynastie d’artiste originaire d’Utrecht. Le présent dessin a vraisemblablement été conçu comme une œuvre aboutie destinée à la vente (Bolten, op. cit.) ou à la gravure quoiqu’aucune estampe n’ait pu lui être associée. Deux autres dessins, l’un conservé à la fondation De Boer d’Amsterdam (inv. B.629; op. cit., n° 1453, ill.), l’autre à la Staatliche Graphische Sammlung de Munich (inv.1078; op. cit., n° 1451, ill.) représentant la même maison en ruines avec des variations mineures. Le thème de la maison en feu semble avoir préoccupé Bloemaert qui l’a traité au moins à une autre reprise en peinture (Christie’s, Londres, 10 Juillet 2002, lot 42).
