This double portrait of Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox and later 1st Duke of Richmond (1574-1624), a Scottish nobleman and a second cousin of King James I of England, with his third wife, Frances Howard (1578-1639), daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon, would presumably have been created to celebrate their marriage in 1621. The artist has conflated two established portrait types: the likeness of the Duke is taken from a full-length of c. 1620 by Paul van Somer (London, National Portrait Gallery); while the portrait of the Duchess relies on a half-length portrait by William Larkin, formerly given to Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (Private Collection). Versions of this double portrait are recorded at Parham Park and Cobham Hall.
