Although the artist of this intriguing drawing on vellum remains anonymous, it could be suggested that they drew inspiration from numerous contemporary Flemish and Netherlandish artists. For example, Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus (1523-1605) who portrayed man's relationship with animals on numerous occasions, as in The Bear Hunt (published as a print by Philips Galle (1537–1612)) which shows a group of knights in armour fighting bears, two of which stand upright as in the present drawing.
