In this inventive composition, Turchi reprises a spirited figural group also employed in a larger-scale canvas painting commissioned by Cardinal Maurizio di Savoia in 1625 (Milan, Koelliker collection). The three figures represent the theological virtues of Hope (far-left, in green, raising the anchor), Charity/Love (centre, holding a torch) and Faith (far-right, steering the boat). Presumably their configuration is intended to suggest that Hope and Charity/Love are supporting Faith, the foundation underpinning all Christian doctrine.

A related drawing of three putti in a boat by Turchi’s contemporary, Fra Semplice da Verona, is held in the Martin von Wagner Museum (see S. Morét, ‘Alcuni disegni sconosciuti di Fra Semplice da Verona a Würzburg’, Arte Veneta, LXIII, 2006, pp. 218 and 221-222, fig. 16, no. 13).

The painting once formed part of the celebrated Manfrin collection, formed by wealthy merchant, Marchese Girolamo Manfrin. He filled Palazzo Venier, Venice, with a significant group of more than 400 Italian, Dutch and Flemish paintings, including such illustrious works as Giorgione's The Tempest (Venice, Gallerie dell' Accademia). Following Girolamo’s death, the collection passed through several generations before it was dispersed from around 1851 onwards, with a final auction taking place in 1897.
