According to the 1929 Sammlung Marc Rosenberg catalogue this brooch was found in a grave near Bingen am Rhein, Germany, and 'the enclosed Roman gold coin was found in the dead man's mouth (the skull is in the possession Prof. Zurstrassen, Frankfurt am Main)'.
The circular brooch is composed of two elements, a bronze back-plate and a gold front plate, attached with silver rivets.
For a similar, see acc. no. 2007.163. at The Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio. Another similar from the Thaw collection at The Morgan Library and Museum, New York, acc. no. 2012.2:113.
