Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960)
Autograph manuscript, vocal score of the comic opera Der Tenor, op.34, Budapest, 2 August 1920
The Stichvorlage, blue ink over pencil, contents list, dramatis personae, title ('Der Tenor / Komische Oper in drei Akten nach der Komödie "Bürger Schippel" / Text von Ernst Goth./ Musik von Ernst von Dohnányi. / op. 34. / Klavierauszug') and 222 pages, 348 x 267mm (paginated 1-220, including additional pages at 36b, 37b, 114 a and b, pp.79-80 blank), mostly on single sheets but with a few bifolia, dated at the end, a working manuscript with frequent cancellations, including full pages of music at pp.13, 134 and 212, and emendations, inner margin replaced with a pasted strip at p.25, lower parts of pp.36a and 37a replaced with a pasted strip, printer's markings in blue crayon.

Composing score for Dohnányi's 'best opera ... one of the few true comic operas written in the first half of the 20th century' (New Grove). The year of composition of this opera, 1920, was also that in which Dohnányi undertook the pioneering feat of performing the complete cycle of Beethoven's piano works, and took over as music director of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, in which capacity he was to do much to promote the work of Bartók, Kodály and other younger contemporaries. Dohnányi manuscripts are rare at auction: RBH records only one sale in recent decades, at Sotheby's, 3 December 2008, lot 28 (a draft of the second movement of the piano concerto in E minor, op.5).
