The image taken at the Willinger Studio at Karnterstrasse 28, Vienna, in 1935, 226 x 167mm, signed on mount (mount lightly spotted). Framed. Provenance: Anna Freud (1895-1982), youngest child of Sigmund Freud, given to – Joseph J. Michaels (1902-1966, American psychiatrist).
Signed portrait in profile: a gift from Anna Freud to a fellow psychiatrist. Joseph J. Michaels was President of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute from 1958-61, an instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and a Visiting Psychiatrist at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. In 1932, he was the recipient of a Commonwealth Fellowship in Psychiatry, an award providing for three years of clinical research. He was a frequent visitor to Austria during this time and is said to have met and worked with Anna Freud on dream interpretation in Vienna, where Freud presented Michaels with this signed photograph of her father.
