In August and September 1915, Sickert stayed in Brighton with his friend and patron Walter Taylor, whose house, at 4 Bedford Square, faced the sea and promenade. The present painting depicts the first-floor balcony of the house, from which Spencer Gore, who had stayed with Taylor in the summer of 1913, had produced two paintings of the pier (Southampton Art Gallery and Mellon Bank).
