Critique d’architecture et rédacteur pendant plus de trente ans au sein de The Architectural Review, Sir James Maude Richards (1907–1992) rencontre Alvar Aalto en 1933, lorsqu’il est envoyé par The Architects’ Journal pour rendre compte d’une exposition consacrée à son œuvre. Cette première rencontre marque le début d’une amitié durable entre l’auteur et l’architecte, dont ces deux fauteuils — demeurés jusqu’à présent dans la famille — sont les témoins.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Richards devient un fervent défenseurs d’Aalto et de l’architecture finlandaise en Grande-Bretagne. Il publie de nombreux articles dans The Architectural Review, présente en 1957 l’émission de la BBC « Finland — the Best of Both Worlds » (The Listener, 25 avril 1957), puis signe A Guide to Finnish Architecture (1966) et 800 Years of Finnish Architecture (1978). Par ses écrits et ses prises de position, il contribue à faire connaître et apprécier à l’international le modernisme humaniste d’Aalto.
From the personal collection of Sir James Maude Richards (1907-1992) - the distinguished British architectural critic and long-serving editor of The Architectural Review — these two Alvar Aalto armchairs carry remarkable provenance. Richards first met Aalto in 1933, when he was dispatched by The Architects’ Journal to review an exhibition of Aalto’s work; the encounter marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between critic and architect.
Throughout his career Richards became one of Aalto’s foremost advocates in Britain, publishing numerous essays in The Architectural Review, presenting the 1957 BBC broadcast “Finland — the Best of Both Worlds” (The Listener, 25 April 1957), and later authoring A Guide to Finnish Architecture (1966) and 800 Years of Finnish Architecture (1978) thus helped to shape the international reception of Aalto’s humane modernism.
