The sitter is likely to be Nobby Gray riding Munning's own horse, simply called "the brown mare", on which he hunted with the Norwich Staghounds. Munnings executed many similar scenes in both oil and watercolour. A watercolour version was bought by Queen Alexandra from an exhibition at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Munnings painted the same scene after moving to Cornwall. He continued to use "the brown mare" as his model, but there it was ridden by Ned Osborne.

We are grateful to Tristram Lewis, Lorian Peralta Ramos and Jenny Hand for their assistance in cataloguing this work.
