One of Patek Philippe's less common mid-century designs, reference 2549 was introduced in 1954 and was only produced for three years. The model's exquisite two-piece case, which was made by renowned casemaker Antoine Markowski and identified by the case maker's key number 8 stamped inside the caseback, was only available in yellow or pink gold.

The watch is powered by the calibre 10-200, which was considered one of the best 10-ligne manual-winding movements at the time. The renowned dial manufacturer Stern Frères created its silvered dial, which has hand-engraved decoration that gives it depth and personality.

The set of unusual, fanciful hour markers that define this model is one of the reference's distinguishing design features. The reference was produced in a number of series, most of which had different lug designs or dial colors, such as black, gilt, or silvered.
