The Aquanaut was a game-changer for Patek Philippe, with a novel concept and a clear target audience of younger, more daring customers. It was the first model from the Geneva maison to have a 'tropical' rubber strap when it was introduced in the late 1990s, making it a true pioneer of what would later be called sports-luxe. The collection was first introduced in a small 35.6 mm. case, but it soon expanded to include larger formats, such as the 38 mm. 'Jumbo' reference 5065 in 1998.
Reference 5167
Reference 5167 marked a major advancement in the model and was unveiled at Baselworld in 2007 to commemorate the Aquanaut's tenth anniversary. It had a bigger 40 mm case that was larger than earlier versions and was equipped with the updated calibre 324 SC. The dial design of the 5167A was slightly altered for a cleaner, more modern look, and it came with an upgraded version of the iconic tropical strap that offered better comfort and durability.
