The present rouleau vase is a characteristic example of seventeenth century Transitional porcelain, produced during the late Ming and early Qing period when private kilns at Jingdezhen developed increasingly inventive forms and painterly decoration. Combining underglaze blue with iron red and gilt embellishment, the vase reflects the richly ornamented aesthetic associated with wares made for the Japanese and European export markets in the later seventeenth century.
The principal scene depicts the Buddhist figure of the Long Eyebrow Arhat (Changmei Luohan), identified by his flowing brows and staff. Traditionally associated with wisdom and longevity, he appears attended by youthful acolytes carrying auspicious attributes including a vase symbolising peace and a ceremonial parasol denoting spiritual authority. The lively composition and animated figures demonstrate the sophisticated painterly style characteristic of Transitional porcelain.
The decoration employs a refined combination of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red enamels and gilt highlights. This decorative approach, both technically ambitious and visually opulent, became highly influential in Japan and later inspired European porcelain manufactories including Meissen and Sèvres.
