Worn at the 1949 inauguration ceremony by President Harry Truman. This was the first time in American history that this event was televised.
Truman's 1949 Inauguration came on the heels of his surprise victory in the election of 1948 over Thomas E. Dewey. Taking the oath of office from Chief Justice Fred Vinson, Truman vowed to oppose Communism across the globe while working to develop the Third World. Known as the "Four Points Speech," Truman vowed to support the fledgling United Nations, continue efforts to right the world economy in the wake of the destruction wrought by the Second World War, and to "embark on a bold new program for making the benefits of our scientific advances and industrial progress available for the improvement and growth of underdeveloped areas."
Truman eventually presented the hat to his Treasury Secretary, John W. Snyder (1895-1985). Snyder and Truman were longtime friends who first met in the Army Reserve during the First World War. Snyder stored the hat in a leather Brooks Brothers hat box with his initials "J.W.S." stamped on the lid.
