The painting reprises the Vision of Saint Eustace from one of Dürer’s most celebrated engravings. Saint Eustace saw a vision of the crucified Christ appear between the antlers of a stag he was hunting. Upon hearing God’s voice spoken by the animal, questioning why he was hunting it, he fell to his knees, was converted and baptised. Here, the saint is shown kneeling on the banks of a stream, transfixed by his vision.
