The present work is a design for the invitation card for the opening of the exhibition Dessins récents de H. Matisse at the Galerie Maeght in Paris in 1952.

This exhibition, presenting sixty two of Matisse’s most recent drawings, was held just two years before the artist’s death and coincided with the inauguration of the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, marking a particularly significant moment in the final phase of his career.

The earliest recorded owner, Claude Jobin, was associated with the printmaker and publisher Fernand Mourlot. Mourlot’s firm was responsible for producing the posters for Galerie Maeght exhibitions throughout the 1950s, including that for the 1952 exhibition for which Matisse conceived the present collaged design, situating the work within the broader context of his late graphic and exhibition practice.
