LOUIS-LEOPOLD BOILLY THE UNFOUNDED FEAR, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, WITH STUMPING, ON AN 18TH CENTURY MOUNT WITH PEARLS AND FOLLIAGE PRINTED DESIGN, SIGNED

Louis-Léopold Boilly established himself early on as one of the leading genre painters of his time, focusing primarily on domestic scenes, and in particular on depictions of childhood. These intimate subjects, generally small in scale, offer a perspective on late 18th-century society that is both sensitive and socially conscious, and are often presented as pairs of paintings.

The Unfounded Fear forms a pair with The Beloved Dove (E. Breton, P. Zuber, Boilly: Painter, Draughtsman and Lithographer. His Life and Work 1761-1845, Paris, 1898, nos. 199D and 201D). These two compositions explore emotional relationships within the family circle. In The Unfounded Fear, a young girl holds her crying little brother close to her as he lies in his cradle, whilst a dog, in the foreground, watches the scene. In contrast, in The Beloved Dove, a young boy presents a dove to a young girl’s lips, under the watchful gaze of a small dog at the feet of a chair.

There is a painted version of these two compositions, now in private hands (figs. 1 and 2), in which a background detail absent from the drawn sheets appears. The pair was engraved in colour by Louis-Jean Allais (1762-1833) after the paintings and published by Bance in Paris (Breton, Zuber, op. cit., n° 1788 E et n° 1791 E). The engraver took several liberties with the original composition, particularly in the treatment of the background and certain minor details.

These drawings are very much in keeping with Boilly’s body of work devoted to the theme of sibling relationships and can be compared with other compositions by the artist, such as The Elder Sister, in The Horvitz Collection in Wilmington (inv. D-F-1370; Breton, Zuber, op. cit., no. 369D), or The Brother and Sister, at the Kunstmuseum in Basel (inv. 1171; Breton, Zuber, op. cit., no. 368D), which feature a similar iconography.

An autograph study in black chalk appears on the reverse of La Crainte mal fondée; this relates to the sketch for another composition by the artist, Les Malheurs de la guerre, which was offered at Christie’s on 11 April 2008 (Private Collection; É. Breton and P. Zuber, op. cit., no. 263). This recent discovery provides valuable insight into Boilly’s creative process and significantly enhances the importance and appeal of the present sheet.
