A Yongzheng-marked vase of very similar form, but of smaller size (21 cm. high) and covered in a Ge-type glaze, is illustrated by Geng Baochang, ed., in Gugong Boyuyuan cang Qingdai Yuyao Ciqi (Qing Imperial Porcelains in the Palace Museum), vol. I, part II, Beijing, 2005, pp. 374-5, no. 173.
This vase was formerly in the collection of Jeptha Homer Wade II (1857–1926), a prominent Cleveland businessman whose interests spanned banking, railroads, mining, and manufacturing. After graduating from Mt. Pleasant Military Academy in Ossining, New York, and Western Reserve University, he pursued a successful business career. In 1906, he established Mill Pond Plantation in Thomasville, Georgia, which was subsequently divided to create Arcadia Plantation. A noted philanthropist, Wade donated an important gem collection to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where it forms the core of the Jeptha Homer Wade II Gallery of Gems and Jewels.
Following in his grandfather’s tradition of civic patronage and interest in the arts, Wade played a pivotal role in the founding of the Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1913, he donated the land on which the museum now stands as a Christmas gift to the City of Cleveland and became one of the museum’s founding trustees. He served as the institution’s first vice president before assuming the presidency in 1920, helping to shape the museum during its formative years.
