Johnny Marr, along with Electronic bandmate Bernard Sumner and record producer Steven Hague, each received one of the newly introduced Stratocaster XII models as a gift from Fender in the late 1980s. The Stratocaster XII saw regular use with Electronic and the Pet Shop Boys throughout the 1990s and Marr specifically recalls using this guitar to record electric 12-string parts on the Electronic singles ‘Disappointed’ (1992) featuring Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant and ‘For You’ (1996), as well as the song ‘Up Against It’ on the Pet Shop Boys 1996 album Bilingual.

My sessions with the Pet Shop Boys have been concentrated affairs and have always been inspiring, wrote Marr in his 2016 autobiography. Neil and Chris are never short of ideas, and I’ve ended up employing a lot of different guitar styles. I’ve played on more Pet Shop Boys songs than any other musician, my favourite song being ‘This Must Be the Place’, from the album Behaviour, but there have been so many good ones, and when I’ve worked with them I’ve always felt a sense of occasion. Remixed by Steven Hague for single release, Disappointed became an international dance hit for Electronic, reaching the top ten on the US Billboard dance charts and peaking at number six on the UK singles chart.
