Mino, Yoro no Taki (Yoro Waterfall in Mino Province) is one of the most striking designs in the series. The waterfall, cascading dramatically down the rocky mountainside, dominates the composition, while the tiny figures gathered at its base emphasize its impressive scale. Hiroshige contrasts the powerful vertical movement of the falling water with the surrounding trees and rugged landscape, creating a strong sense of depth and movement.
Yoro Waterfall was celebrated as a famous scenic and spiritual site and was associated with a well-known legend of filial devotion and longevity. Hiroshige heightens the waterfall’s almost supernatural presence through his dramatic composition and subtle use of bokashi. The delicate gradations of blue and green, together with the fine embossing of the falling water, give the cascade a luminous, almost tactile quality. This print may be one of the finest examples of Hiroshige’s skill in incorporating the natural woodgrain of the printing block into the composition, using it to enhance the texture and movement of the cascading water.
