Assembling Before the Demonstration exemplifies Alexander Rodchenko's revolutionary approach to picture-making at the height of the Soviet avant-garde. Depicting figures gathered for a political demonstration in 1928, the image transforms a contemporary street scene into a rigorously constructed visual statement. Viewed from a steep angle, the gathering crowd becomes a pattern of intersecting forms, shadows, and diagonals that reflects Rodchenko's Constructivist conviction that photography could reshape perception. This composition distills a collective social moment into an image of modernity, movement, and political energy.

This is the only variation of this image known to exist and one of only three photographs that Rodchenko captured of this scene to have come to auction. A close variation, of this same scene, is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
