Created to celebrate French racing driver Jean Alesi’s participation in the legendary Indianapolis 500, the F.P. Journe Octa Sport Indy 500 was produced as a limited edition of just 99 pieces, individually numbered from 501 to 599. Based on the original Octa Sport, the model was crafted from a high-tech aluminium alloy commonly used in aeronautics, reflecting F.P. Journe’s pursuit of exceptional lightness and performance.
The Octa Sport Indy 500 was available with a dial bearing the Indy 500, Lotus and Jean Alesi logos as a direct tribute to motor racing, or with a more understated plain black dial, as found on the present timepiece. Despite its substantial 42 mm. diameter, the watch weighs an astonishingly light 53 grams, providing remarkable comfort on the wrist.
Complementing the lightweight case construction, the automatic calibre 1300.3 is fitted with a unidirectional aluminium-alloy rotor incorporating a tungsten segment to improve winding efficiency. Comprising 86 components, the movement is finished to F.P. Journe’s exacting standards, with bridges decorated with Côtes de Genève and a finely grained baseplate. The combination of its extremely light construction, distinctive provenance and limited production makes the Octa Sport Indy 500 a fascinating expression of F.P. Journe’s approach to contemporary sports watchmaking.
