Fête nocturne (Nocturnal Festival), painted in 1999, is a compelling example of Chu Teh-Chun's late exploration of light. The composition unfolds within a vast, tranquil blue expanse, animated by a luminous band of white, yellow, pink, and green that sweeps across the canvas like fireworks illuminating the night sky. Fluid brushwork allows light and colour to emerge and disperse organically, while a soft pink glow on the right echoes the central radiance, enhancing the work's sense of space and poetic atmosphere. Chu Teh-Chun's treatment of light reflects a creative synthesis of Western artistic traditions. The radiant central glow recalls Rembrandt's spiritual use of chiaroscuro; the subtle modulation of colour reveals an affinity with Paul Cézanne's construction of space through chromatic relationships; and the diffusion of light throughout the composition evokes J. M. W. Turner's fusion of light and atmosphere. Yet in Fête nocturne, these influences are transformed through abstraction. Light becomes more than a means of illumination; it is a vital force and rhythmic energy that animates the boundless pictorial space, conveying a distinctly Eastern poetic sensibility. The work was exhibited at Espace Atrium in Geneva, The Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo, and the Museum of History in Taipei. Included in the artist's 2007 Tokyo solo exhibition and the 2008 retrospective Chu Teh-Chun at 88, and reproduced in the accompanying catalogues, it exemplifies the significance of this work within the artist's late oeuvre.
