Mutrie studied under George Wallis at the Manchester School of Design. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1853-1884 and at the British Institute and New Water Colour Society from 1853-1878. She was the sister of Miss Annie Feray Mutrie, and the work of both sisters was admired by Ruskin for its truthfulness
