De l’élégance géométrique de l’Art déco aux lignes épurées du modernisme, du rêve de l’après-guerre aux libertés créatives de la couleur et du plastique, un siècle entier n’a cessé de réinventer notre manière d’habiter le monde.

Ce dialogue constant entre forme et usage, rigueur et invention, trouve une résonance singulière dans l’œuvre de Claude Lalanne, dont nous célébrons cette année le centenaire. Chez Claude Lalanne, l’objet devient paysage, le mobilier devient présence, et le fonctionnel s’ouvre au rêve : une modernité sensible, botanique, poétique, où la matière se fait vivante.

Présentée pour la première fois au public, la Collection Christian Mattler rend hommage à une passion patiemment construite. Ingénieur, architecte, esprit libre, Mattler fit de son intérieur parisien un manifeste moderniste : un art de vivre éclairé, guidé par l’exigence des lignes justes et la conviction que le design cultive notre regard autant qu’il accompagne notre quotidien.

À travers les œuvres présentées dans cette vente, c’est la mémoire d’un siècle qui s’exprime : un siècle d’intelligence et d’élégance en mouvement, où Paris demeure, plus que jamais, un lieu vivant de la modernité.

In 1925, Paris became the laboratory of a new world: an aesthetic driven by progress, innovation and a modern way of living. From the geometric elegance of Art Deco to the refined lines of Modernism, from post-war ideals to the creative freedoms of colour and plastic, a full century has continuously reinvented the way we inhabit our environments.

This constant dialogue between form and function, rigor and invention, finds a singular resonance in the work of Claude Lalanne, whose centenary we celebrate this year. In her hands, objects become landscapes, furniture becomes presence, and functionality opens to dreams: a sensitive, botanical and poetic modernity, where matter comes alive.

Presented to the public for the first time, the Christian Mattler Collection pays tribute to a passion built with patience and precision. An engineer, architect and free spirit, Mattler turned his Parisian home into a modernist manifesto: an enlightened art of living, guided by the pursuit of pure lines and the belief that design shapes our gaze as much as it elevates our daily lives.

Through the works presented in this sale, the memory of a century is expressed: a century of intelligence and elegance in motion — with Paris remaining, more than ever, a living landmark of modernity.

Agathe de Bazin

Specialist, Head of Department | Design

After a double degree in Art History at the École du Louvre and in Management of Cultural Goods and Activities at the ESCP business school, Agathe started her career in an international auction house from 2015 to 2020. In April 2020, Agathe de Bazin joined Christie's in the Design department, as Head of Sale. She quickly took charge of organising sales, particularly collections that would mark the history of design sales in Paris in 2021: namely the Marion Lambert, Stéphane Danant, Annie and Jean Dalsace (Maison de verre) and also Daniel Lebard collections. All these names sound like ideal opportunities to confront the views of those who are at the origin of the most beautiful design collections of the 20th century. Since her arrival, Agathe has contributed to the numerous world records that have marked these sales: no less than 11 for the Stéphane Danant collection, 2 for Pierre Chareau (in the Annie and Jean Dalsace collection), 24 for the Daniel Lebard collection, as well as the world record for a Claude Lalanne work, the 'Structure végétale' chandelier, which reached €3,740,000.

Après une double formation en histoire de l’Art à l’École du Louvre et en management des biens et des activités culturels à l’ESCP, c’est dans une maison de vente internationale qu’Agathe fera ses premières armes de 2015 à 2020. En avril 2020, Agathe de Bazin fait son entrée chez Christie’s au département Design, en tant que responsable des ventes. Elle y prend rapidement en charge l’organisation de ventes et particulièrement de collections qui marqueront l’histoire des ventes design à Paris en 2021 : à savoir la collection Marion Lambert, Stéphane Danant, Annie et Jean Dalsace (Maison de verre), ou encore celle de Daniel Lebard. Autant de noms qui sonnent comme des occasions rêvées de se confronter aux regards de celles et ceux qui sont à l’origine des plus belles collections de design au XXe siècle. Depuis son arrivée, Agathe a contribué à obtenir les nombreux records mondiaux qui ont rythmé ces ventes : pas moins de 11 pour la collection Stéphane Danant, 2 pour Pierre Chareau (dans la collection d’Annie et Jean Dalsace), 24 pour la collection Daniel Lebard, ainsi que le record mondial pour une œuvre Claude Lalanne, le lustre ‘Structure végétale’ qui a atteint €3,740,000.

Capucine Tamboise

Specialist, Head of Sale | Design

Graduated from Warwick University in Art History and from Essec in Management, Capucine started her career in several international auction houses. In 2014, Capucine joined Artcurial and actively worked on the creation and development of two specialty departments. She was in charge of the organization of Scandinavian Design sales and contributed to obtaining several records for Danish and Finnish designers like Paavo Tynell. In 2023, Capucine returned to Christie’s where she began her career in 2008, as a specialist in the Design department. Her knowledge of the market will be a major asset to continue the development of 20th Century Design sales.

Flavien Gaillard

Head of Design, Europe | Design

Prior to joining Christie’s Paris in 2013, Flavien Gaillard was a Design dealer, with an experience of organising two exhibitions dedicated to 1960s French designers Max Sauze and Jean-Louis Avril. Flavien’s expertise lies in developing French design from 1950s and onwards.

In his role as Director of Design, he is searching for furniture from great designers from the post-war period, including Jean Prouvé, Alexandre Noll, Charlotte Perriand, and Jean Royère. In 2017, he organised the sale Tribute to Jean Royère, where he sold a pair of armchairs Ours polaire at a world record of €847,500. In 2018, Flavien was in charge of the Georges Jouve family collection, which became the biggest collection ever sold at an auction, totalling over €1,000,000. In November 2019, Flavien presented a never-before-seen commission by Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, with unique pieces untouched since 1951. Alongside this collection, a beautiful bookcase Tunisie by Charlotte Perriand sold for €225,000.

Robin Beyries

Associate Specialist | Design

Robin graduated from Law and History of Art from Panthéon-Sorbonne University, holding a Master’s degree in European Law and a bachelor degree in History of Art. Robin joined the Design department in Paris at the beginning of 2017 and developed his expertise in Design first as in intern and cataloguer with a particular affection for French Art Deco. Over his career Robin has played a central role in the authentication of works under research, with a focus on French Design, and today liaises with an international network of external committees, specialists and institutions. During his time at Christie’s Robin contributed to the success of the ’white glove’ sale of Les Giacometti d’Hubert de Givenchy that achieved the highest result for a Design sale in 2017 (€ 32,748,500) and secured a pair of stools by Diego Giacometti. Set for inclusion in a Paris Design sale in 2019 the pair fetched €394,000.

Robin est diplômé en droit et histoire de l’art de l’université Panthéon-Sorbonne. Il est titulaire d’un master en droit européen et d’une licence en histoire de l’art. Il a rejoint le département Design à Paris début 2017 et a développé son expertise en Design, avec une affection particulière pour l’art déco français, d’abord en tant que stagiaire puis catalogueur. Il a également contribué à obtenir un ensemble de tabourets signé Giacometti. Inclut dans une vente Design à Paris en 2019, le prix a atteint €394,000.
