Dr Esther Mahlangu’s Café Bar Takeover

Discover Ndebele art at Christie’s during London’s Frieze Week

  • Event date 8–17 OCT
  • Event location 倫敦
Christie’s is delighted to collaborate with Dr Esther Mahlangu, one of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists, on a special takeover of the Café Bar at our St James’s headquarters.

On view from 8–17 October, during London’s Frieze Week moment, visitors are invited to experience the joy, energy and precision of Mahlangu’s designs up close.

Mahlangu has been painting for more than eight decades, beginning her artistic journey at the age of ten under the guidance of her grandmother and mother, learning the traditional techniques of Ndebele mural painting. Her bold, geometric designs have since been celebrated worldwide, spanning murals, canvases, cars and architectural projects.

Christie’s Café Bar will be transformed into an immersive environment of vibrant colour and pattern, reflecting both the rich heritage of Ndebele art and Mahlangu’s pioneering contemporary vision. This collaboration is aligned with the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, where Mahlangu’s work will also be exhibited.

Step inside during Frieze Week and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of one of Africa’s most inspiring artists.
