An exceptional collection of works on paper from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation will be offered for sale this September to fund grants for arts education organizations throughout New York City.

The Foundation was established in 1995 by Tana Matisse, drawing on works her late husband Pierre inherited from his father. It has long been the Foundation's aim to put these holdings at the service of under-resourced public schools and community centers in New York. Classes spanning every art form—from drawing, printmaking, painting and sculpture to theatre, music and dance—allow young people to develop and express themselves in ways previously unavailable, whilst also helping to improve their general academic performance. As one student memorably commented: "Before, I didn't know who I was. Now I do."

The works on offer in this sale are sold to help support more students find out who they truly are.

The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation

The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation owes its existence to three exceptional people: Henri Matisse, his son Pierre, and Pierre’s wife Tana.

Born from the extraordinary generosity and vision of its founder, The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation has become a leading champion of arts education across New York City's vibrant communities. To date, the Foundation has touched countless lives through grants totaling more than $50 million — but its true impact goes far beyond numbers.

What makes the Foundation distinctive is its commitment to listening to educators, artists, community leaders and learning from those who know their neighborhoods best. By trusting and supporting these extraordinary partners, the Foundation helps amplify the meaningful, lasting change that dedicated practitioners are already creating in their communities.

The Foundation nurtures creativity and cultural connection through three thoughtfully designed programs:

Grants for Arts and Arts Education: An open door for emerging voices and established organizations alike, welcoming diverse applicants across all artistic disciplines.
Schools Choose Grants: A transformative investment of $500,000 over five years to select public schools, empowering principals and educators to follow their visions and priorities ensuring that arts education thrives even when budgets tighten.
Arts Education Impact Grants: An invitation to dream big, providing $150,000 annually for five years to visionary organizations ready to push boundaries across visual arts, film, theatre, music, dance, spoken word, and media art.

The Foundation's legacy is one of trust, and unwavering belief in the power of arts education to transform communities and unlock the best of human potential.

Pierre truly enjoyed talking about art. He had an incredible way of being down to earth and making it feel accessible and approachable, even to young people.
