This April, Christie’s Paris is honored to present an exceptional collection of works on paper from the Fondation Pierre et Tana Matisse. Established in 1995 by Tana Matisse, the Foundation has for decades preserved drawings and prints inherited by Pierre Matisse from his father. This esteemed ensemble spans the full breadth of Henri Matisse’s preferred motifs: nudes, portraits, decorative explorations, drawings of dancers, floral motifs, and Mediterranean scenes.

A charitable event, the proceeds of the sale will be used to support the Foundation’s initiatives, notably benefiting underfunded public schools and community centres in New York. Since its creation, the Foundation supports a wide range of art classes within these institutions, ranging from drawing and painting to sculpture, from theatre to dance, enabling young people to develop their creativity, and encourage positive self-expression.

For admirers of Matisse, the sale represents a unique opportunity to acquire a part of his legacy.

Pierre truly enjoyed talking about art. He had an incredible way of being down to earth and making it feel accessible and approachable, even to young people.

The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation

The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation owes its existence to three exceptional people: Henri Matisse, his son Pierre, and Pierre’s wife Tana.

Born from the extraordinary generosity and vision of its founder, The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation has become a leading champion of arts education across New York City's vibrant communities. To date, the Foundation has touched countless lives through grants totalling more than $50 million — but its true impact goes far beyond numbers.

What makes the Foundation distinctive is its commitment to listening to educators, artists, community leaders and learning from those who know their neighbourhoods best. By trusting and supporting these extraordinary partners, the Foundation helps amplify the meaningful, lasting change that dedicated practitioners are already creating in their communities.

The Foundation nurtures creativity and cultural connection through three thoughtfully designed programs:

  • Grants for Arts and Arts Education: An open door for emerging voices and established organisations alike, welcoming diverse applicants across all artistic disciplines.
  • Schools Choose Grants: A transformative investment of $500,000 over five years to select public schools, empowering principals and educators to follow their visions and priorities ensuring that arts education thrives even when budgets tighten.
  • Arts Education Impact Grants: An invitation to dream big, providing $150,000 annually for five years to visionary organisations ready to push boundaries across visual arts, film, theatre, music, dance, spoken word, and media art.

The Foundation's legacy is one of trust, and unwavering belief in the power of arts education to transform communities and unlock the best of human potential.

Tana Matisse established the Foundation with a passionate vision to further the great artistic legacy of her family by ensuring that young people have access to the arts regardless of their circumstances. Over more than 20 years, we have been honored to champion arts and arts education organizations throughout New York City, awarding 800 grants totaling more than $50 million. Great art connects us all, empowering communities and changing lives for the better. This auction honors the memory of Tana and Pierre, and will continue our mission of expanding creativity and human connection through the exceptional work of our grant recipients.
—Alessandra Carnielli, Chief Executive Officer, The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation
