In 1788 Rooker embarked on a series of sketching tours of the countryside and it is likely that the present drawing was executed during one such tour. The Church of St Margaret's contains a number of thirteenth century frescos, including a depiction of the murder of Thomas--Becket at the east end of the chancel.
