GRAVELOT [HUBERT FRANÇOIS BOURGUIGNON, called]. VOLTAIRE, FRANÇOIS MARIE AROUET DE. Complete suite of 44 ORIGINAL SIGNED DRAWINGS for the Oeuvres (Geneva 1768-1774). [Paris, c. 1767]. Matted and bound into 2 large 4to volumes, 369 x 311 mm. (14 9/16 x 12 1/4 in.), red morocco janséniste, smooth spines lettered in gilt, turn-ins gilt, g.e., by Marius-Michel, with his gilt-stamp on upper turn-ins, a few small scrapes to vol. 1, slipcases (broken), occasional light mostly marginal foxing, occasional slight soiling, a few small marginal stains.
Two printed title-pages in red and black, 44 highly finished drawings in pen-and-ink and sepia wash, each within a hand-ruled ink border, average size 187 x 135 mm., signed "H. Gravelot inv. [or] inven.", all but 5 with neat hand-lettered captions at bottom, many with captions at top also identifying the play, act and scene, the drawings in modern pale blue mats within gilt and black ruled borders (unexamined out of mats), a few with traces of white wash covering erasures or retouchings, one drawing (vol. 2, no. 4, L'Orphelin de la Chine, last scene) with pasted down correction. One of the drawings was unpublished. Cited in Cohen-de Ricci, 1042.
"Pleased with the eventual result of their collaboration in Corneille's Oeuvres [see preceding lot], Voltaire sought Gravelot's participation in an edition of his own works. The scale chosen for his illustrations, ten for La Henriade and thirty-two for the plays, was larger than that employed in any other of Gravelot's major books... indeed, Gravelot referred to his designs as 'tableaux'"...--Ray French 21.
Provenance: Withdrawn from the Gravelot sale in 1773 -- Paignon Dijonval -- Charles-Gilbert, vicomte de Morel-Vindé, bookplate (sale, 17 March 1823) -- Comte de Chabot -- Henri Beraldi, bookplate (sale, Paris, part 2, 29 May-1 June 1934, lot 103) -- Raphaël Esmerian, bookplate (sale, Paris, part 3, 6 June 1973, lot 103) -- the present owner.
