The original, on canvas, 128 x 192 cm, was acquired by the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, from the Armand de Pret de Terveken family in 1883. This date suggests a terminus-post-quem for the date of execution of this copy

The original, executed in 1638, is Jordaens's earliest known rendering of this subject that was to become a favourite one (see R.A. d'Hulst et.al., Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678), I, Schilderijen en Wandtapijten, exh. cat. Antwerp, 1993, pp. 178/180)
